Chairman
Dr Tony Austin AM
MBBS, MPH, FRACMA, FRACGP, DAvMED, GAICD
Dr Tony Austin retired from the position of Head, Defence Health Services in 2008. Tony has nearly thirty years of experience in the provision of healthcare in remote and austere environments using dynamic, multi-disciplinary teams. Since his retirement he is now able to develop his interests in rural, remote and Indigenous health. He has first-hand experience of many of the problems facing this sector as he has lived and worked in many outer metropolitan and rural regions across Australia. This experience included some time with the Townsville Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Medical Service. More recently he has tried to encourage potential health providers, in particular those of Indigenous backgrounds, to see service in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) as a viable pathway for them to acquire the clinical, administrative and leadership skills needed to succeed in rural and remote regions of Australia. In 2001 he was a Director of the Hawkesbury Division of General Practice and is a graduate of the AICD Company Directors Course. Tony has recent Board experience working with the Australian Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health, and the Centre for Military and Veterans’ Health. Tony is also an Adjunct Associate Professor within the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Queensland and is an examiner with the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators.
