The Remote Area Health Corps (RAHC) is excited to announce the launch of a new eLearning module, Sepsis Recognition and Management. RAHC created the module in collaboration with the Northern Territory Department of Health (NT DoH) and Aboriginal Medical Services Alliance Northern Territory (AMSANT).

RAHC eLearning modules provide free, high quality and easy-to-access education on health issues prevalent in the remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health context. These modules are available to all Health Professionals (HPs) and anyone interested in remote and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. HPs considering a placement with RAHC are particularly encouraged to complete them.

The module addresses findings that there is a wide underappreciation for the severity of sepsis. Evidence suggests there are often failures in sepsis recognition and delays in escalating care to senior clinicians. As sepsis is a life-threatening illness, appropriate and timely management is critical. This eLearning explores best practice sepsis management pathways in the NT.

 The eLearning module aims to:

  • define sepsis
  • describe the broad pathophysiology of sepsis
  • explain the impact of sepsis
  • highlight the high and moderate risk factors of sepsis and septic shock
  • demonstrate steps to recognise and resuscitate in sepsis management
  • explore the barriers to effective recognition of sepsis.

This module will be a valuable resource for all HPs, particularly those providing care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in remote communities and regional towns in the NT.

The Sepsis Recognition and Management module takes approximately 1 hour to complete.

RAHC, the NT DoH and AMSANT would like to thank our course designers and reviewers for their valuable contribution to the module.
